In September 1901 the Smith Funeral Home was opened by J.T. Smith who operated a hardware store on Main Street in Stockton for more than ten years before starting in the funeral business. When Mr. Smith died in 1917 his son Frank who had grown up in the business took over.
In 1937 the large home of Frank’s wife Eva Brobst, was converted into a mortuary and memorial chapel. It was one of the first funeral homes in northwest Kansas.
When Frank died in 1948, his son, John Smith along with his wife Roma took over with his mother Eva. John also had grown up in the business and was licensed for more than fifty years with the Kansas Funeral Directors Association.
In May of 1952 Elton Smith joined the firm and became half owner in 1969. Elton and his wife Marcella became full owners and operated the funeral home for 34 years until their retirement in 1986. Plainville Facillity
In July of 1986 Elton & Marcella sold the funeral home to Doug and Diedre Moore. Doug had worked for the Mosher Funeral Home in Plainville for over eight years while Diedre taught school. Doug and Diedre returned to Plainville after acquiring the Plainville Medical Clinic which had been closed for sometime. They remodeled the facility and opened the Moore Funeral Chapel in 1989.
In 1996 Doug and Diedre sold the business to 21st Century and Ron & Cindy Overlease. In 2005, Ron and Cindy along with Phil & Susie Stinemetz purchased the funeral homes along with the Stinemetz Funeral Home in Hill City from 21st Century and now fully own and operate the funeral homes in Stockton, Plainville, and Hill City. The Smith-Moore-Overlease Funeral Home and Moore-Overlease Funeral Chapel have been the primary funeral homes in Rooks County for over 100 years and Ron and Cindy will continue the tradition of personal service in the future.
